Windows 98 is quite ancient. If you don't want to upgrade to XP, go for a nice Linux distro like Ubuntu, Mepis, SuSE, etc. Linux may sound scary but the newest distros are really user-friendly.-Marc
I could not agree more. Linux has really blossomed of late and is extremely user friendly. My fiancée (who almost always uses Windows) has no trouble using Ubuntu on my laptop. Even if you are striking out on your own (so to speak) with Linux, there are so many resources available to help you cope with the switch (though saying that makes it sound worse than it is - I promise). I highly recommend joining and reading through the official forums for which ever distribution you choose (this is where I get 99% of the help I need - they are, for the most part filled with friendly helpful people). Another great option is finding a local Linux Users Group (LUG). Many times LUGs have members that volunteer to help new users install and become accustomed to Linux.
Perhaps 98SE is dead...but most of the 70Million will hold on, me included. Why? Because it still does everything I want ( including running satallite TV) Programmers like me EARN money from computing I don't spend it on computing. Linux? I have it, have written drivers for hardware recompiled Kernel's, patched it,written round it ( SuSE 10.0 is still nowhere near)and to be fair unless you can you are better off leaving Linux alone. If you want to just use the apps that pre-install fine and you are lucky enough to have all the right hardware, and printer...and as for Wine, I have yet to find ANY major software that will run properly ( if at all) with it.What about XP? Again I have it but don't use it (only Professional supports the web server)...and 98SE does that anyway, so why bother?I don't play games on computers (too boring)perhaps that's the difference?
